Applicants and potential applicants from around the world have asked us good questions over the years about various aspects of applying to Capria. We’ve covered a lot of the frequently asked questions below but please contact us if you’d like additional information.
Q: How do I get access to the most recent application?
A: To learn about Capria’s application process, you can request the application by going to http://2021.capria.vc/get-application/. If you have already requested the application, you can login to your submittable account to begin filling out the initial application.NOTE: Due to the increasing global interest in our work, we are now accepting new applications by invitation only. Please do not take the time to complete an application unless we’ve asked you to do so.
Q: Should I apply today or wait to the application deadline?
A: We review applications on a rolling basis, so apply as soon as you are invited to do so by a Capria team member.
Q: How far along do I need to be to apply?
A: We work with managers at various stages in the development of their funds. We expect you to have strong, committed senior leadership team and a well formulated investment thesis that you have started to test in the market. At a minimum, this means you have initial traction with investors and you have a robust pipeline of investment-ready opportunities.
Q: How do I know if I am too far along to apply?
A: If you are still working towards final close of your fund, even if you have already hit first close, we encourage you to apply. If your fund is closed but you are coming to the end of your investment period and anticipate launching your next fund in the next six months, we would also consider your application provided you have a well formed investment thesis and meet our other selection criteria.
Q: Do you accept applications from first-time fund managers as well as with fund managers with existing AUM?
A: Yes. About half of the Capria Network fund managers have AUM at the time they were accepted and the other half are first-time fund managers. All have deep investing experience in the various markets in which they are operating.
Q: I don’t need the capital but I am interested in working with you, is this possible?
A: Yes. Please sign up on http://edge.2021.capria.vc and we will follow up with you after reviewing your submission.
Q: There are still some decisions we’re making as a team regarding some of the questions asked in the application, should we wait to apply?
A: It depends on what you are still trying to figure out. Please contact us to ask any clarifying questions.
Q: I’m thinking about launching a fund but I’m not sure if I’m ready to make the commitment, should I still apply?
A: No. If you’re not sure if you’re going to launch a fund, we would recommend that you simply sign up for the Edge platform http://edge.2021.capria.vc to let us know that you are interested..
Q: If my application is selected, what happens next?
A: If your application passes our initial screen, we will contact you to set up an initial conversation. Our selection process involves a series of information requests and conversations with our team.
Q: I’m only looking for capital and fundraising support, should I apply?
A: No. Although we provide capital and support the fundraising efforts of each fund manager that is selected, we are not a placement agent. We are interested in partnering deeply with each of the managers we select and we are also looking for managers who are interested in collaborating with other members of the network.
Q: How will my application be evaluated?
A: Please review our selection criteria before submitting an application. We also evaluate teams across some of the elements that make up the eight categories of Capria Quantum, a proprietary, comprehensive, capabilities assessment tool that we use to support funds in the Capria Network on their journey to become world-class investment firms.
Q: What are the categories that make up Capria Quantum?
A: You can learn more about Capria Quantum here. The eight categories of Capria Quantum include:
- Team and Foundational Skills
- Governance & Advisors
- Branding, Marketing & Business Development
- Fundraising & Investor Relations
- Pipeline Development & Investment Process
- Portfolio Management, Support & Returns
- Impact Measurement, Reporting & ESG Policies
Q: Do I have to excel across all areas of Quantum to be considered by Capria?
A: No, but in order to build an enduring, world-class investment firm you will need to constantly improve in each of the core categories. Depending on where you are at in the development of your firm and fund, results will vary. We don’t know a single firm in the world that would score at the highest level across each category. We are looking for fund managers who can critically evaluate their firm and who exhibit the learning agility required to be successful.
Q: Does Capria consider selecting teams that are not investing in emerging markets?
A: At this time, we are focusing on funds that are investing in emerging markets, but we are starting to look at others as well.
Q: My team is not currently located in the market(s) we plan on deploying capital. Do we have to be in market?
A: That is highly preferred. We expect that someone from the senior leadership team is located in market. We also understand this is a more complex and nuanced question if you are a regional fund, a global fund, or currently in the process of building out your team.
Q: My fund is targeting concessionary returns – will Capria engage with us?
A: Not at this time. Capria works with local fund managers that will deliver market-rate financial returns and scalable impact. Feel free to make use of the Capria Edge resources – that platform is open to all.
Q: How important is it to have impact defined? What are your expectations for reporting?
A: You should be able to articulate an initial impact thesis. We will work with you to refine and further develop this over time. We work with each manager to identify how best to monitor, measure, and report out on impact over time.
Q: If we’re selected, what else does Capria provide beyond capital?
We work holistically with each of the fund managers we select across all aspects of fund management. We collaborate on a one on one basis, tailoring our services to meet the unique needs of each team. Selected managers also gain access to our growing network of other leading fund managers in emerging markets. Each fund manager, including Capria, shares intellectual property, tools, and connections that enhance our collective and individual success. You can learn more here.
Q: Are my answers to the questions in Capria Edge considered part of my application? Do you judge me on those answers?
A: No. We use the Capria Edge information only to learn who you are and what your high level focus is. If there is an alignment with our current investment strategy, we will reach out to you to learn more and then ask you to complete a formal application.
Q: What happens once I apply?
A: We review applications on a rolling basis throughout the year. We aim to respond to applications within two weeks of submission ONLY if we have asked you to apply. Unsolicited applications may or may not receive a reply.
Q: How long does the complete screening process take?
A: It depends on when your application is submitted. If it is submitted right before an upcoming deadline it may take slightly longer due to the volume of applications we typically receive. We aim to make decisions within 8 weeks of application submission. However, it can take longer depending on how quickly you respond to our additional information requests and schedule your interviews.
Q: What does the screening process look like from start to finish?
A: We have a series of standard information requests that follow the initial application. You have the opportunity to interact with most, if not all, of the senior members of our team as we get to know each other further and as we move towards making a decision.
